Southwestern College Investment Club
Fall 2021 - Zoom Meeting Room

See you all on February 3rd for Spring 2022!

Welcome to the Southwestern College Investment Club for Fall 2021!

We meet online on Thursdays from noon to 1 pm.
Here is the link to the Zoom meeting room: SWC Zoom Meeting Room

Each week, we invite someone from the financial and investment services industry to come and discuss their segment of the industry and their position. We also ask them to relate their experiences and how they got their start in the industry. Alternatively, we choose and discuss an investment topic from one of our professors.

Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings onlines. Membership is limited to current Southwestern College students.
However, we want to emphasize that everyone is welcome!
If you have a specific topic or position within the industry you are interested in, please feel free to ask about it.
We hope to see you at our next meeting!

Fall 2021 Meetings

26 August 2021: Our first meeting of the Fall 2021 semester. We will discuss the objectives of the club and choose officers.  Zoom Recording
Ah, not the best turnout. Hmmm. We need at least 10 members along with a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and
the ICC Representative to make a club. We'll see what happens next week.

2 September 2021: Our second meeting was more fruitful. We had over 10 students so we will have enough members  Zoom Recording
We discussed the club and the officers although we only had one position filled. We will need to fill all positions within
two weeks. We chose 10 stocks for our semester length portfolio project.

9 September 2021: In our third meeting, we must first choose officer in the first 15 minutes. At 12:15, we will have guest speaker
from Thrivent Financial to discuss the opportunities for careers. Very cool!  Zoom Recording
We have our President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasury. We still need one or two or three Interclub Council Representatives.
Ooops! Mr. Little from Thrivent was a no-show. We discussed various topics including brokerage accounts and how brokerages make
money with $0 commissions. Hope to see you all next week!

16 September 2021: Well, no one has come forth to be the InterClub Council Representative yet. If we don't have one by next week, then
won't be an official club of the college. That's okay. We can still meet every Thursday.  Zoom Recording
We discussed a variety of topics including stock research, why Robinhood is not free, and .
Send your questions and topics that you would like to see address to fpaiano@swccd.edu.

23 September 2021: It's officious. We won't be an official club this semester. Oh, well. No biggie. We will still meet on Thursdays.
We had our Introduction and Overview of Investments presentation.  Zoom Recording
Send your questions and topics that you would like to see address to fpaiano@swccd.edu.

30 September 2021: A Sip from the Investment Firehose! We introduced the Discounted Cash Flow Model and The Value Line.
For next week, identify a company you would like to research, go their website, and download their Annual Report.  Zoom Recording

7 October 2021: We continued our discussion of Discounted Cash Flow Model and The Value Line. We looked at JPMorgan and FedEx.
Professor Paiano found a bug in his spreadsheet! We also discussed P/E ratios and Stitch Fix (SFIX), a budding new industry.  Zoom Recording
Next week, we have a treat! A former Southwestern student and founding member of the Investment Club comes back to tell us
about his career in the industry.

14 October 2021: Robert Anthony Mckinney, also known as RAM, will speak at our October 14th meeting. He is a former student of Southwestern
and is now a Registered Representative (a.k.a. Stockbroker) and Field Trainer for PFS Investments. He is persuing the license to be a
Registered Investment Advisor. We are excited to have him come speak. (He was a charter member of the Investment Club in 2018.)  Zoom Recording

21 October 2021: Matthew and Jared of DeplayStarShip.com came and bedazzled us with their tales of adventures in Cryptocurrency, NFTs, and
video games. We are looking forward to being able to play a video game and earn cryptocurrency!  Zoom Recording

28 October 2021: Don Nuding gave us a dynamite presentation of the tremendous investment research resource, The Value Line.
It was truly a sip from the financial firehose.  Zoom Recording

4 November 2021: We made a sell decision! Can you believe it?! We decided to sell GlobalStar and buy Costco. It's about time!
We also looked at a few other stocks and discussed kleptocurrencies, ooops!, my apologies, cryptocurrencies.  Zoom Recording

18 November 2021: Flavian from Romania and his Investment Club Partners give us a view of investing from the other side of the pond
in Europe. Very cool! Zoom Recording

Fall 2021 Portfolio -- 10 stocks starting with $10,000 each

3 September 2021: We are off to a great start! Almost 3% up. (Much better than the BUS-123, Introduction to Investments, class.)

10 September 2021: GlobalStar has been our star. We are still at 3% even though the market went down this past week.

17 September 2021: GlobalStar has now become our "teaching moment." Lesson: Never trade on a rumor!

24 September 2021: Well, we held up pretty well in a brutal week. Well done!

1 October 2021: Yet another dismal September. Whaddya' think October will be like? (Do we really want to know?)

8 October 2021: Well, we have recovered a bit, eh? Could be worse!

18 October 2021: Clawing our way back to even!

22 October 2021: Getting closer to breakeven! (Darn GlobalStar!)

29 October 2021: Oh, so close to breakeven!

5 Nov 2021: We did it! We are above $100,000! And we sold GlobalStar and bought Costco!

12 Nov 2021: Woo, woo, woo! We are now up over 1%! Hurray!

19 Nov 2021: Uh, oh! Back below $100,000. Pooh.

26 Nov 2021: Yikes! Covid strikes again! Darned microbe!

3 Dec 2021: Well, we learned an important lesson. Sell your losers and hang on to your winners!

There is a Future for You in the
Financial and Investment Services Industry!

Please consider pursuing a career in the industry. The financial and investment industry is enormous. The industry is always looking for new, energetic individuals. There are numerous career path opportunities. From banking to real estate finance to insurance to brokerage firms, there is a place for you. In fact, the industry is actively seeking bilingual speakers and women. Going forward, they understand that diversity is essential to the success of their businesses. They simply love ex-military folks. (The financial industry is highly regulated and who better than those who have already lived and worked in a structured, regulated environment?)

Here at Southwestern, we offer an Associate in Business Administration with an Emphasis in Finance. We also offer a Certificate of Achievement in Financial and Investment Services. Either of these will help you land a position at a bank or credit union, an insurance company, a real estate finance firm, a brokerage or other investment management company, or any of the many other finance-related and investment-related companies.

You don't believe us? You think you need a four-year degree from a prestigious university? Aha! You are wrong! The dirty little secret in our industry is that a degree from a prestigious university is not a guarantee that someone will perform well as a financial adviser with the general public. The recruiters will tell you that they have no reliable method for predicting how someone will do in the industry. Someone with a certificate from a community college might surpass a whole room full of graduates from the Ivy League universities.

We have our own predictors. Are you a positive, optimistic person with a sunny disposition? Do you like to socialize? Do you enjoy meeting new people? Do you want to help them succeed? Are you not afraid to ask someone if they need your help? If they say, "No," are you still willing to go to the next person and ask the same question ... and then go on to ask twenty-seven more people? In short, are you a go-getter who refuses to give up? Will you never give up?

If you can answer, "Yes," to all or most of these questions (especially the part about never giving up), we guarantee you will do well in the industry. You might bounce around from one position to another for a bit but you will find your place. Talk to a counselor about our programs. Or better yet, please contact either Professor Suganya Sarkaranayanan or Frank Paiano above via email.

We wish you all tremendous success in the future and we look forward to talking to you about a potential career in the finance and investment industry.

P.S. Did we mention that salaries in the financial and investment industries are well above the national norms? Hmmm? Think about it seriously, Dear Students. The investment industry needs you!

Speaking of diversity, this past year, Walgreens now has a Black Woman CEO. Ladies, Minorities, We Need You!
